Abstract

Federated Learning (FL) enables multiple clients to collaboratively train a global model without sharing raw data, preserving privacy. However, adversarial attacks pose significant threats to model robustness. Adversarial training (AT) is a promising defense, but applying it in FL can be limited by device capabilities and communication costs. In this study, we investigate the effect of partially applying adversarial training across clients. Specifically, we analyze how the number of adversarially trained clients influences the global model's robustness in an IID setting. Experiments show that even a subset of adversarial participants can significantly improve model resistance against various attacks, while maintaining high natural accuracy. These results offer practical insight into applying AT selectively in real-world FL systems.
