Abstract

In this thesis, I tried to investigate some debates on internet nationalism in China and analysed it focusing some problems produced in the course of China's participating in globalization. The first point of issue is this: Does Internet nationalism run on the same track as growth of democracy and globalization of China? Especially, lots of domestic discourses relating internet nationalism are not only being progressed in the sturucture of liberalism and neo-leftism, which rised to the surface in the end of 90s; they are but also have connected up to postcolonialism, postmodernism in early 90s and enlightenment discourese held in the “Cultural Debate” in the middle of 80s. The second point is the problems of globalization and ‘cultural identities’ which are based in the debates of internet nationalism. In China, internet nationalism seems to be contradictory: apparently chinese netizen stands against western world and emphasizes their own cultural identities: but internally they have strong desire to take part in the universal world which western people have constructed like market-capitalism or system of democratism. This is the ‘double burden’ chinese people are carrying on their back in the step forward to globalization; at the same time it is kind of ambivalence of universalism ideology of globalizaion has inside.
