초록
The paper reviews the changing relationships between youth and modernity in China for the past century. It examines the discourses surrounding the idea of youthfulness and its links to national modernity both borrowed and developed from the European the Chinese local intellectual resources. The metaphorial appropriations of the figure of youth by the May Fourth movement, ironically, lead to its subordination under the nationalist-modernist projects championed respectively by the fasicist KMT and the revolutionary CCP. The paper also argues that the discourse of 'generational conflicts' in the eighties shortcircuited the emergence of a genuine breakthrough from the yoke of the May Fourth tradition despite a very vibrant revival of the protesting voices of the youth at that time.
