The Process of Searching for Historical Model to Rebuild the Intellectual Community: A Brief Analysis on Studies of National Southwest Associated University since 1980’s

The primary sources about National Southwest Associated University(NSAU) were opened to the public as the Chinese liberalism was revalued in the 80's. However, due to the Tiananmen Square protests and the enforcement of free market economy system, the intellectuals were pushed to the margins of society and divided into many groups. During this chaotic period in which there were great division and collapse of traditional values,the 90's Chinese intellectuals found a possibility of rebuilding the intellectual community through Habermas' "bourgeois public sphere"theory. NSAU had two characteristics as the intellectual public sphere: first, it was the field of open communication; second, it criticized political authority through the formation of public opinion. The present Chinese intellectuals are trying to design their ideal community based on their studies of NSAU, but at the same time,it is inevitable to discover that their goal cannot come to fruition. Apart from the studies on the great achievements of the intellectual community in NSAU, there are problems to solve: how can the unique formation of NSAU be applied to present China and what are the solutions to change the political environment so that the right to criticize the political authority is guaranteed.
