초록
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological condition characterized by uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations in the legs that are relieved by movement. While RLS is a common disorder, many patients are still remained undiagnosed. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, sociodemographic characteristics of RLS in rural elderly. Various comorbidity, depression and sleep disturbance were also assessed. Methods: This study was designed as a descriptive, cross-sectional, face-to-face interview research by well trained neuropsychologist and neurologist. A total of 328 people aged 65 years old and over participated. The criteria suggested by Korean version of the international restless legs syndrome study group were used in the assessment of RLS. We performed face-to-face interview and various clinical examinations. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDepS), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and insomnia severity index (ISI) were carried out. Results: The prevalence of RLS in rural elderly was 9.67% (male, 5.1%; female, 11.7%). No significant differences were found in comorbidities between the subjects with and without RLS. Estimated GDepS, PSQI, and ISI showed no statistical significance, too. Conclusions: The prevalence of RLS was relatively high in this study, compared to previous studies.
