Abstract

A Study on the Vice Presidency in the U.S.Kang, Seung-SikThe Vice Presidency in the U.S. has evolved into an institution far different from its original design. Until about 1940, perhaps the biggest problem with vice presidency in the U.S. is that the job has a fancy title, but few responsibilities. Other than presiding over the Senate, the vice president of the U.S. has no constitutional duties. But over time, the jobs of the vice president have expanded. The formal powers and role of the vice president in the U.S. are limited to the Presidency of the Senate. The primary power as the Presidency of the Senate is to cast a vote in the event of a Senate deadlock. Their other functions are as a drafter and spokesperson for the administration's policy, as an adviser to the president, as chair of a national advisory councils. Their influence in this role depends almost entirely on the characteristics of the particular administration. Normally, candidates for president will name a candidate for Vice President when they are assured of the party's nomination. Generally, the choice of running mate is ultimately made by the presidential candidate alone and often is done to create balance on a ticket. In addition to, the Twenty-fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution clarifies an ambiguous provision of the Constitution in its original form regarding succession to the Presidency, and establishes procedures both for filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President as well as responding to Presidential disabilities. The history of the vice presidency in the U.S. gives suggestions to the presidential system in the current Korean Constitution.
