초록
Background and Objectives Rifle firing, a high-impact noise, often leads to acoustic trauma, causing significant hearing loss. This study investigates the characteristics of noise-induced hearing loss in young police officers resulting from rifle shooting, particularly focusingon detecting the noise level of 4 kHz and 6 kHz notches. Subjects and Method The study examined medical records and audiometry results of conscripts who experienced hearing loss or tinnitus after rifle shooting between December 2008and December 2017. Excluding cases with potential pre-existing hearing issues, 52 individualswere analyzed. Hearing thresholds were measured before and after treatment using the audiostar pro device. Pure-tone audiometry was conducted, focusing on the detection of 4 kHz and6 kHz notches. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS Statistics 25.0, consideringa p-value of <0.05 as significant. Results The study included 52 male participants, aged 19 to 25, with an average age of 21.0years. Thirty-three had unilateral hearing loss, and 19 had bilateral hearing loss, totaling 71ears were analyzed. Tinnitus was the most common symptom, followed by hearing loss andear fullness. Among the affected ears, 74% exhibited hearing at a 6 kHz notch, while only 8%showed hearing at 4 kHz notch. The highest hearing threshold was found at 6 kHz post-treatment, with a statistically significant difference between the 4 kHz and 6 kHz thresholds(p=0.002). No significant difference was found between the 6 kHz and 8 kHz thresholds(p=0.993). Conclusion The results suggest that patients were particularly vulnerable at the 6 kHz frequency and likely experience acoustic trauma caused by rifle shooting.
