Abstract
Glottalization in Nuuchahnulth exhibits very unique patterns. Stops/affricates never fail to be glottalized, while fricatives never become glottalized. Furthermore, whenever a fricative is affected by a glottalizing suffix, a glottalized glide appears on the surface rather than a glottalized fricative. This paper discusses all the characteristics of glottalization of Nuuchahnulth obstruents, concentrating on the alternation within individual fricatives. The interaction between Markedness and Faithfulness and Richness of the Base, two major principles of Optimality Theory, will provide clues to the questions raised by the data given in the paper.
