서양단추 디자인의 시대적 변천에 관한 연구 - 고대, 중세, 근세시대를 중심으로-

본 논문은 서양 단추 디자인이 어떻게 발전되어 왔는지에 대한 역사적 고찰로써 단추의 기원이 되는 서양 단추의 역할과 단추 디자인을 기능별, 시대별로 고찰해보고 그 특징을 알아보고자 하였다. 문헌조사와 실증조사를 통한 각 시대별, 기능별 특징은 다음과 같다.단추의 기원은 이미 1만년 전에 뼈 조각이나 나무 조각 형태의 잠금단추의 사용에서 유래한다. 기원전 약 6천년 전의 것으로 추정되는 호박으로 만든 원반모양의 이중단추와 신석기시대의 것으로 추정되는 조개껍질이나 돌로 만든 단추를 추정해 볼 수 있다. 그러나 고대에는 단추가 옷을 여미는 기능적 역할 보다는 주술적인 상징품이나 장신구로서의 역할을 담당하였다. 현재와 같이 기능성을 갖춘 단추가 등장한 것은 13C 이후 몸에 꼭맞게 재단된 옷의 출현과 단추구멍의 고안으로 진정한 의미의 단추가 등장하였다. 단추가 옷을 여미는 주된 수단이 되어 기능적인 역할과 함께 보석, 수정, 레이스, 청동 등의 재료를 이용하여 부와 지위를 표시하는 장식적이고 상징적인 역할을 하게 되었다. 르네상스 시대라고 불리는 16C에는 수공업의 발달과 예술적인 움직임이 활발했던 당시의 사회문화적 분위기를 반영하여 표면장식기술과 보석가공기술이 발전하였다. 또한 단추가 착용자의 부와 명예를 표시하는 상징적 신분표시수단이였기 때문에 귀족들은 큰 단추를 달았을 뿐만 아니라 금, 은, 보석, 산호, 법랑과 같은 고가의 재료를 사용하였다. 르네상스 시대를 지나며 단추는 기능적인 역할을 넘어 장식으로써 발전하게 되었다. 르네상스 시대에는 세밀하게 가공된 장신구가 주도적이었지만, 바로크 시대의 장신구는 세밀한 작업 대신 사용된 재료의 가치가 중시되었다. 이 시대는 단추가 장신구와 장식품으로 가장 많이 사용된 시기이기도 하다.로코코 시대는 과학기술의 발달에 따라 단추가 가장 성행한 시기로, 이 시기는 역사상 단추의 황금기라고 할 수 있다. 단추가 하나의 독립적 공예품으로 사용되고 유리, 강철 등을 사용한 값비싼 보석들의 이미테이션이 만들어지게 되면서 단추가 장식적인 용도 뿐만 아니라 기능적인 용도로도 많이 사용되었다. 시대별 서양단추의 특성 및 역할에 대한 이상의 내용을 표로 나타내면 다음과 같다.<표 1>
Abstract
Buttons in general reflect the culture of the society, and their values depend on practicality, decorative feature, and symbolism. Their infinite potential enables us to attempt various original changes in formative factors such as forms, patterns, colors, materials and sizes. In addition new styles, methods, and techniques are tried to show that the decorative feature becomes stronger today than it did in the past when the function was more important. Now buttons are not only a factor of clothing but have value as composite art works reflecting the pride, idea and culture of a nation. Moreover consumers' interest in new designs increases everyday as the moderns' desire for unique individuality rises. Button designs of Korea, however, are still far behind in the aspects of materials, qualities, and methods, facilities, and scale of production. And uniform mass production prevails without the buttons of creative and artistic values made due to the lack of specialized designers. Therefore it seems necessary to carry out historial studies simultaneously with the rising interest in button designs now. Prior to developing new designs, the study will examine those of western buttons that are the origin, going through relevant literature and data to define the characteristics of each era and type. It may prorvide basic data for developing the backward button designs of Korea.
