그림책 일러스트레이션의 장식표현 연구 - 월터 크레인의 그림책을 중심으로

장식은 시대별로 여러 학자들 사이에서 정의되어 지고 있으며, 이를 토대로 장식은 자연과 어우러진 질서를 가진 것들로써 미를 보충할 수 있는 도안이라고 정리할 수 있다. 또한 장식은 미술 분야 전반에 이르러 현대에까지도 많이 사용되어지고 있는 표현방식 중 하나이다. 이러한 장식은 시대적 상황에 따라 부각되는 때와 침체가 되는 때가 번갈아가며 변화되어 왔다. 특히 장식이 활발하게 사용되어지던 시기는 아르누보 시대이다. 아르누보 운동은 그림책이 본격적인 장르로 형성되는데 역할이 컸다. 인쇄물의 제작과 보급을 통해 사회적 뿐만 아니라 시각예술의 영역에서도 변화가 일어났으며, 순수예술 외에도 생활의 미의식을 추구하는 예술이 등장하였다. 이러한 활동은 그림책의 시각적 표현이 강조된 기능을 중시하여 장식 미술의 영역에서 다루어지게 되었다. 월터 크레인(Walter Crane)은 그래픽 디자이너이며, 영국의 3대 그림책 작가 중의 한사람으로 최초의 그림책 작가로서 영향력 있는 디자이너이다. 또한 윌리엄 모리스와 함께 아르누보 운동에 영향을 준 미술 공예 운동의 창시자이기도 하다. 본 연구에서는 크레인의 장식에서 표현되어진 형태에 집중하여 장식이 표현된 대상, 성향, 그리고 장식이 영향을 받은 시대에 대한 역사적 분류를 하였다. 크레인의 장식은 유형적 분석을 통해 대상에 따라 의복, 생활 속 공간구성, 공간 속 사물, 건물장식으로 분류할 수 있었다. 또한 장식의 성향에 따라 생물, 풍경, 추상적 형태, 사물로 분류할 수 있었다. 이러한 장식의 역사적 특성은 크레인이 생활하였던 19세기를 나타내는 장식이 가장 많았으며, 르네상스의 시대성을 띄는 장식이 많았다. 향후 본 연구에서 다루어지지 못한 다양한 작품 속 장식에 대한 연구가 필요할 것이며, 그의 그림책 속 장식의 표현을 통해 현대의 그림책 장식표현의 방향을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Decoration has been defined by many scholars across different periods of time. Based on these definitions, it can be summarized as a design that can supplement aesthetics that have an order harmonized with nature. In addition, decoration is one of the expressive methods which have been widely used until modern times across all areas of arts. Such decoration has changed alternately between the times when it was highlighted and the times when it was stagnant. In particular, it was actively used in the period of art nouveau. The art nouveau movement has played a significant role for the picture book to be formed as a full-scale genre. Through production and distribution of printed publications, there were changes in visual art areas as well as social areas, and the arts that pursued aesthetics in living emerged as well as pure arts. Such activities emphasized functions that focus on visual expressions of picture books and were dealt within the area of decorative arts. Walter crane was a leader in graphics and one of the first among the top three British picture book writers, who was influential as a designer as well. In addition, he was a co-founder of the arts and crafts movement together with William Morris who had an influence over the art nouveau movement. This study focused on the forms of decorations which were expressed in William Crane's works and historically classified the targets, trends and times in which the decorations were influenced. Crane's decorations are classified into clothing, spatial arrangement in living, object in space and architectural decoration depending on the target. Depending on trends, they are classified into living objects, landscape, abstract form and objects. The majority of such historical characteristics of decoration represented the 19th century in which Crane was living and the temporal characteristics of renaissance. Future studies need to focus on decorations in his work which were not addressed in this study, and the expression of decorations in his picture book may present the future direction of modern picture books.
