Abstract

Modern Art by it’s very nature breaks down barriers, redefines the everyday, traditional materials and techniques and seeks to transfigure, converge to allow freedom and diversity. Knitting has always been well in the traditional method of styles with line and loop structures or loop and loop as building blocks for complex structures. These continuous loop structures acquire an elasticity and according to the intent of the designer acquires an openness, confinement, transparency, lightness, expansive qualities. These qualities derive from the repetitive lines formed in the knitting process of combining and deconstructing. Such constructs are expressed as repetitive, decorative, variable structures used in a transforming and converging manner in modern art as well as industry. Especially within the rapidly developing field of 3D printing, knitting structures are being utilized in a variety of capacities for artists in realizing their visions and work. In industry, such structures are used to fortify on a structural level, really setting a new paradigm shift for a new lifestyle. This paper looks into examples (specifically within 3D printing) of how knitting structures are impacting the field of industry and modern art and the possibilities it holds.
