Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore new possibilities in aesthetic and functional expression by integrating traditional hand-crafted production techniques with FDM 3D printing, a digital manufacturing method. This research aims to develop a unique production approach aligned with recent advancements such as 3D printing and robotic production, responding to the growing consumer demand for self-expression. Initially, a case study was conducted as a research methodology. The case study examined various fabrication methods categorized into 1) analog fabrication, 2) digital fabrication, and 3) combined analog + digital fabrication, summarizing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Based on the findings from the case study, a planned material experiment was conducted to explore the aesthetic and functional potential of three commonly used materials in FDM 3D printing: ABS, PLA, and PETG plastics, using innovative surface treatment techniques. For ABS materials, a textured surface was achieved by dissolving support structures in acetone, an inorganic solvent, and applying them to the output. For PLA materials, support structures were melted and layered onto the surface to create a texture reminiscent of gypsum sculptures, leveraging their property of quick melting and hardening under heat. PETG, known for its slow hardening after heating, was manipulated to achieve a unique surface texture influenced by gravity during solidification. These innovations represent a significant advancement in surface texture expression not typically seen in conventional FDM 3D printing, enhancing material durability without the need for additional painting or adhesive coatings. Furthermore, this study confirms the potential for enhancing sustainability through novel fabrication techniques that add intrinsic value.
