Abstract

The peony pattern, as an important element of Chinese art, not only holds rich cultural significance but also exhibits unique aesthetic forms within its historical context. Modern design research primarily focuses on the symbolic meaning and applied design aspects of the peony pattern, with relatively insufficient studies on the cultural significance of traditional patterns and their application in contemporary design based on semiotics. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of the application of traditional peony patterns in modern design based on Roland Barthes' semiotics. The research methodology involves analyzing the symbolic meanings and characteristics of peony patterns from the Wei, Jin, Southern, and Northern Dynasties to the present through Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. It synthesizes the semiotic characteristics of traditional Chinese peony patterns in contemporary design. This includes an in-depth analysis of the semiotic layers of peony patterns, examining the cultural meanings inherent in the basic elements that form the patterns, such as line characteristics, composition, and color, as well as the relationship between the signifier (Sr) and the signified (Sd). Additionally, through comparative analysis across different eras, the study reviews the development and changes of peony patterns in various historical contexts, elucidating the aesthetic characteristics and cultural implications of each era. Finally, the study analyzes the characteristics of modern peony patterns based on Roland Barthes' semiotics, identifying the aspects of modern peony patterns that have evolved through morphological creation, visual reconstruction, and media diversification. This research enriches the academic understanding of peony patterns and provides a reference foundation for contemporary designers in applying traditional cultural elements. Ultimately, it is expected to offer new perspectives and theories for the transmission of traditional Chinese culture through modern design.
