마셜 맥루언(Marshall McLuhan)의 ‘매개론’ 관점으로 본 확장현실 공간 특성 연구

4차 산업혁명의 도래와 스마트 기술의 지속적인 발전으로 확장현실 기술을 핵심으로 하는 가상현실이 점차 우리의 일상생활에 접목되고 있다. 공간에 확장현실 기술을 도입해 공간연장성 체험을 높이고 창의적 공간인식과 사고양성을 병행하는 마샬 맥루언의 ‘매개체 즉 인간의 연장’은 어떤 매개체도 인간의 감각과 감각의 확장이나 연장에 불과하다는 것을 연구했다. 가상 기술은 정보 전달 및 인식 확장을 위한 수단으로 매개체 이론의 표현으로 간주될 수 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 마셜 맥루언의 ‘매개론’ 개념과 확장현실 이론을 통해 확장현실 공간의 특성을 찾고, 맥루언의 '매개론' 개념을 확장현실 공간에서 구체적으로 표현하는 요소를 탐색하고 공간 설계 해석 방법에 대한 이론적 개념을 제안하는 것이다. 연구방법은 확장현실 이론과 분석을 통해 공간 표현 특성과 발전 방향을 찾는 것이다. 맥루언의 철학적 배경과 선행 연구를 바탕으로 매개론 특성을 도출하고, 이를 기준으로 확장현실 공간을 분석하여 매개론과 확장현실공간 특성의 관계를 탐색한다. 연구 결과는 매개론 선행 연구에서 도출된 특징 요소를 바탕으로 확장 현실 공간의 사례를 분석하고, 매개론과 확장 현실 공간의 관련성과 특성-키워드, 몰입성, 정보의 다양성, 연결의 역동성, 체험의 확장성, 감각적 확장성, 이해의 리모델링성, 체험의 연속성을 도출하는 것이다. 결론적으로, 확장현실공간에 매개론을 적용함으로써 맥루언의 매개론을 기반으로 확장현실공간 요소를 분석하여 확장현실 공간에 대한 새로운 이론적 시각과 개념을 제공하고 공간문화의 확산을 강력하게 뒷받침한다. 본 연구를 통해 맥루언의 매개론을 확장현실 공간에 적용하고, 그 연관성을 탐색하며, 매개론의 공간 특성의 개념을 제시하고, 확장현실 공간 설계의 해석방법에서 기초자료로서 활용가치가 있다고 판단된다.
Abstract
With the advent of the 4th industrial revolution and the continuous development of smart technology, virtual reality, driven by extended reality (XR) technology, is gradually becoming integrated into our daily lives. Marshall McLuhan’s ‘medium, human extension’ theory, which introduces XR technology into space to enhance spatial extension and foster creative awareness and thinking, posits that any medium is simply an extension of human senses. Virtual technology can thus be seen as an expression of medium theory, facilitating information transmission and awareness expansion. This study aims to identify the characteristics of extended reality space through McLuhan’s ‘mediation theory’ and XR theory, explore elements that specifically express McLuhan’s concept in XR space, and propose a theoretical approach to spatial design interpretation. The research method involves analyzing extended reality theory to uncover spatial expression characteristics and development directions. Based on McLuhan's philosophical background and prior studies, the study derives mediation theory characteristics and examines the relationship between mediation theory and XR space characteristics. The research analyzes XR space cases based on mediation theory elements, deriving key characteristics such as keywords, immersion, information diversity, connection dynamics, experience expansion, sensory scalability, understanding remodeling, and experience continuity. In conclusion, by applying mediation theory to extended reality space, by analyzing the elements of extended reality space based on McLuhan’s mediation theory, it provides a new theoretical perspective and concept for extended reality space, and strongly supports the spread of spatial culture. Through this study, McLuhan’s mediation theory is applied to extended reality space, the relationship is explored, the concept of spatial characteristics of mediation theory is presented, and it is judged to be worth using as basic data in the interpretation method of extended reality space design.
