Abstract
This study aims to examine the concept of the “perfect home,” a theme that artist Do Ho Suh has speculatively explored in his artworks, through the lens of the private realm. The research takes inspiration from Suh’s solo exhibition held at Art Sonje Center, Seoul, in 2024, and his upcoming solo exhibition scheduled for the first half of 2025 at Tate Modern, London. It examines home not as a physical structure but as a private domain, with a focus on Suh’s continuous relocation and his pursuit of the “perfect home.” To achieve this, the study employs Hannah Arendt’s concept of “property,” as presented in her work The Human Condition, as a theoretical framework for distinguishing the private from the public domain and discussing the private character of the spaces inhabited by Suh’s body. According to Arendt, property forms the basis of an individual’s sense of place within the world, extending from the body to objects that bear the marks of one’s existence. Within this context, the study identifies the home symbolized in Suh’s works as originating in the familial sphere, shaped by the “name of the father,” thus confirming the domestic space as the most private realm. After separating from the home, which serves as the foundation of his constructed identity, Suh’s perspective shifts toward recognizing individuality embedded within the collective. For the artist who explores bodily mobility, clothing represents the smallest occupiable space for the body, suggesting that home is an extension of clothing. Lastly, this paper uses the theme of the “perfect home” to examine private representations of subjects with unique spatial belonging, emphasizing Suh’s artistic journey and his fluid individuality, which contrasts with the rigidity of ideologically constructed Korean collective identity.
