Abstract
The purpose of this study is to propose effective methods for conveying the emotions of spoken language to individuals with hearing impairments by utilizing typographic expressions. Focusing on four basic emotions—anger, joy, fear, and sadness—the study aims to investigate effective typographic attributes and expression methods. The research was conducted in the following steps: First, attributes and their corresponding expression methods were defined based on visual elements related to typography, such as light, color, texture, and shape and typographic images were created according to these criteria. A survey was then conducted with professionals in the field of visual design to identify appropriate attributes and expression methods for effectively conveying emotions. Second, movements representing the intonation of spoken language were applied to the selected images, and a series of short videos were produced to convey the emotions of spoken language with added vitality and intonation. In order to prepare a survey with hearing-impaired individuals, a survey was conducted to validate and select the appropriate typographic movements amongst short videos. Third, one-on-one interviews were held with people who have moderate to severe hearing loss and a speech recognition rate of 50% or lower. The goal was to understand their emotions toward different typographic movements and the reasons behind their responses. The findings revealed that for “fear,” attributes such as lower lighting with high contrast, rough texture realistically described and creatively invented, and organically sharp shapes in both simple and complex forms were identified as effective. For “joy,” green analogous colors applied to a character and blue analogous colors applied to both a character and the background were effective. For “anger,” organically sharp shapes in both simple and complex forms were also found to be effective. However, no statistically significant results were observed for “sadness.”
