Abstract
This study started from the perspective of healing the social and psychological problems of modern people through the feeling of sublime by studying the expression method and method of color cotton abstract painting among contemporary art, focusing on Jean-Francois Liotar's sublime theory. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the works of representative sublime expression artists to confirm the way of expressing discomfort and pleasure, and to present a new formative language. First, the development of the sublime theory was organized along with the organization of the sublime concept of philosophers by period, and the relationship between sublime and contemporary art was explained through paradigm. In addition, focusing on the ‘resistance, negative presentation, and passion’ of ‘dysentuality’, which is the characteristic of dissonance and inconsistency claimed by Liotar, the main goal of this study, the works of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, representative authors of abstract expressionism, were compared and analyzed by dividing them into ‘lines, faces, shapes, and colors’, which are the basic elements of painting. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that sublime aesthetics were highly related to the postmodern dismantling paradigm, and that sublime expression was developed through common and original expression methods and methods found in Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman’s works. It was intended to remind the connection, meaning, and value of contemporary art and Liottar’s contemporary philosophy, and to suggest that the audience can directly or indirectly feel the sublime, a concept (emotion) that cannot be seen with the naked eye, through the work. In conclusion, it was intended to suggest that the sublime can be expressed visually, and the inspiration and possibility of its infinity. Through this study, we hope that various studies that can enhance the emotions of modern people based on the purpose of contemporary art in the future will continue, and we hope that it will be used as an academic basic data for the direction of works of art.
