Abstract
This study aims to redefine the concepts of ‘theatricality’ and artistic ‘object’, including the temporality of the viewer, as critical terms for understanding contemporary art by analyzing and interpreting how ‘theatricality’ and ‘objecthood’ are expressed and defined in contemporary art as a differential measure of modernity and postmodernity. First, this study begins with the concepts of ‘objectivity’ and ‘theatricality’ in Minimalism, which Fried refers to as non-art. In the criticism of minimalism, Fried insisted on excluding ‘theatricality’ including the viewer’s temporal experience and ‘objecthood’, which has fallen into a non-artistic object, from art. Krauss, on the other hand, affirmed that theatricality, which endowed artistic objects with the temporality of the viewer, could be applied as a differential measure of modernity and postmodernity. Second, Fox defined ‘theatricality’ as a kind of postmodern context in which an artwork tends to evoke in the mind of the viewer something of the Other that is empirically incomprehensible. In contemporary art criticism, artistic ‘objects’, which have their own way of being, are not complete manifestation of art itself, but are constantly changing and manifesting in different ways in their interaction with each other. Through this study, the researcher has identified the possibility of constructing this new horizon of meaning of ‘object’ in ‘theatricality’. Third, unlike Fried’s non-artistic ‘object’, Harman’s ‘object’ is all beings with a quadruple structure of sensual qualities, sensual objects, real qualities, and real objects. In the study of contemporary art works, it was confirmed that the artistic ‘object’ creates a tension between sensual quality and real objects and presents them to the human viewer, thus assuming ‘theatricality’ as an indispensable condition for the viewer’s temporal experience. In conclusion, the concepts of ‘theatricality’ and ‘objecthood’, which have been reinterpreted and reevaluated by contemporary critics, are decisive and fundamental elements in contemporary art criticism.
