Abstract
Structural equation modeling(SEM) has shown a rapid growth as one of the most widely used statistical techniques in the social science area. However, despite this qualitative growth, it is consistently criticized by many scholars. Thus, in this study, we investigated the limitations of SEM with examples, and suggested valuable implications. The implications are as follows: First, in order to use SEM correctly, researchers should study and/or understand prior statistical knowledge such as reliability, factor analysis, and regression before they use SEM. Second, SEM belongs to the confirmatory study, not exploratory study. Thus, researchers should avoid developing conceptual models based on data results, and conceptual models must be developed by theoretical background. Third, when a researcher plans to measure certain concepts or variables, choosing the multiple-item based measurement method is strongly recommended than the single item based measurement method. Also, even if a researcher chooses multiple item method, he/she should check whether those items properly reflect the meaning of the concepts. Fourth, the model fits are important indicators to be reported in the paper. However, the researchers remind that good model fits do not always mean a valuable model. Also, model fit modification must be used properly, and it is desirable that modified parts in the conceptual model should be reported with logical reasons.
