Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the effects of an individual’s self-image related variables on the individual’s attitudes toward innovative wearable devices (i.e., clothing or accessories that incorporate advanced electronic and computing technologies such as smart band, smart watch, and smart shoes). Compared to other technological devices such as smart phones or PCs, a wearable device is a much more visible part of a user as it is worn by the user for extended periods of time. Hence, it is expected that the congruity between the user’s self-image and the wearable device’s personality reflected in the physical product design would play an important role in the consumer’s product attitudes. The current research intends to examine whether a consumer’s attitudes toward a wearable device can change depending on the type of product-self image congruity (actual vs. ideal self image), and more importantly, whether the congruity effect can be moderated by the consumer’s self-continuity. Results from an experimental study show a statistically significant two-way interaction effect of self-continuity and self-congruity type on consumer attitudes toward wearable devices. In specific, we found that people who were low on self-continuity liked a wearable device better when its physical design reflected the user’s ideal (rather than actual) self-image. In contrast, the product preferences of those who were high on self-continuity were not influenced by whether the product design reflected the user’s actual self-image or ideal self-image. The present research contributes to the literature on innovative product adoption by demonstrating that consumers’ personal variables such as self-image and self-continuity can play significant roles in their product preferences for high tech products like wearable devices. The research also contributes to the literature on self-continuity (where the influences of one’s low self-continuity on behaviors and decisions were found to be mostly negative) by identifying a positive or at least non-negative role of low self-continuity in a marketing context. This paper also helps marketing practitioners to better understand why it is important to consider the type of self-image/product-image congruence when they design wearable devices.
