Abstract
The problem of iconicity has been a recurring theme in linguistic inquiry into the nature of the linguistic sign. The property of iconicity includes not only the narrow category of sound symbolism, but also the broad categories of conceptual blending and metaphor. This paper argues that iconicity is manifest on all levels--phonological, morphological, syntactic, pragmatic--in language. The property of iconicity is discussed with a few illustrative examples in three sub-principles--those of linguistic expressions related to linear order, quantity and distance--in connection with each of the levels. This review shows that iconicity is omnipresent in language.
