초록

The Chinese author Cao Xueqin created a remarkably complex novel about the human experience and subjectivity in Honglou meng (Dream of the Red Chamber). The degree to which he unfolds a self-conscious analysis of narrative itself within the margins of the novel has not been adequately treated previously. In particular, the main character Baoyu’s adventures involving visual representation are intended as an allegory for the mimetic function of fictional narrative. So also the minor character Xichun who tries to paint a picture of “ T h e Garden of the Greater Vision” serves as a miniature author within the novel who tries to create a parallel mimetic structure. Such self-consciousness on the part of the author is directly related to 17th century attempts of Chinese scholars to develop a sophisticated discourse on fictional narrative in the form of pingdia nannotation .
