초록

This article explores the historical transformation of the relationship between Chinese state authority and popular religious lives. In particular, this study examines the causes of the Northern Song (Bei Song , 960-1127) government's growing interest in popular religious cults, which reflected innovative approaches toward popular religion by the New Policy reformers (Xinfadang ). The reform movement was dedicated to state-centered statecraft, and thus the reformers sought to establish official control over popular cults through a state-centered administrative system. They attempted to establish a hierarchical order throughout the spiritual realm by creating a comprehensive pantheon that combined the officially-recognized deities entered in the state register of sacrifices with local popular cults. Therefore, the Northern Song reformers' new approach toward the popular cults brought about significant changes in the relationship between the state and local religion in Chinese history.
