Abstract
Mongolia, which established the largest empire in human history by connecting Europe and Asia into a world in the 13th and 14th centuries, has been recognized as a barbaric being that used looting and slaughter. However, through archaeological excavations and exhibitions developed in the Mongolian Empire, we newly realized their luxurious cultural tastes and identities. Among them, the saddle arches found in China's Inner Mongolia region(內蒙古), Mongolia, Ukraine, and the Middle East region, reflect Mongolia's subjectivity best. For Mongolians, horses were indispensable for survival and the driving force behind the birth of the Mongolian Empire. The saddle, a type of harness, was a symbol of the status of owners as well as practicality, and horses were very important in Mongolian society, so the saddle arches were splendidly made not only for practical purposes but also for hunting and showing off in processions. Horse saddle arches were unique to horse-riding nomadic peoples who were active on horseback in the northern part of China, and appeared for the first time in the Xianbei(鮮卑) tombs of the Southern and Northern Dynasties of Weijin(魏晉南北朝), and many saddle arches made of gold and silver were excavated from Liao Dynasty(遼代) tombs. In Yuan Dynasty(元代), the saddle arches shows a clear difference from before in the deformities and decorative patterns, giving the overall practical, concise, and luxurious feeling. Moreover, these saddle arches, all excavated from the tombs of Mongolian women, show the role and status of Mongolian women who contributed to the establishment and maintenance of the Mongolian Empire. The reason why such a new type of saddle arches was produced in Yuan Dynasty was that Mongolia embraced a group of craftsmen from various backgrounds, leading the cultural conflicts and convergence between them to naturally permeate art. In addition, Kublai Khan, who unified all parts of China to build a circle, reorganized the Organization of the Imperial Workshops during the Yuan Dynasty by bringing together artisans scattered in various regions. In the end, Mongolians embraced and made full use of artisan groups from various backgrounds to order and produce the goods they wanted to suit their tastes and preferences, and to reflect their own cultural identity in art.
