마태는 양과 염소의 비유(마 25:31-46)에서 선행 구원론을 펼친다. 이 논문은 바울의 이신득의 사상과는 사뭇 다른 그 진의를 파악하고자 시도한다. 그리하여 마태가 믿음을 배제하지 않으면서도 일관되게 율법의 의와 선행을 강조한다는 사실을 밝힌다. 오늘날 다수의 학자들은 이 비유에서 언급하는 ‘지극히 작은 자’를 마태공동체가 세계 도처에 파송한 선교사로 본다. 그러나 본고는 이런 해석의 약점을 지적하고 ‘지극히 작은 자’의 정체를 가난 ․ 소외 ․ 억압으로 고난 받는 이웃들을 가리킨다고 주장한다. 마태의 예수는 이 비유로 공동체의 책임을 제기한다. 이때 선행 여부는 마지막 심판의 핵심 기준이다. 연구자는 마태가 말하는 선행이 체다카(Tzedaka)의 충실한 이행이라 보고 이 비유에서 사회적 연대의 기본정신을 발견한다.
Abstract
Matthew presents a ‘soteriology of good deeds’ in the parable of sheep and goats. This article aims to show the author's intention with such a soteriology which is different from the Pauline doctrine of justification by faith. In this parable the Matthean Jesus emphasizes the fulfillment of the law in good deeds consistently, yet without excluding faith. Nowadays most scholars interpret the ‘one of the least’ in the parable as a Christian missionary sent out by the Matthew's community. In contrast, I point out the weakness of that interpretation, arguing that the least ones were the poor neighbors who were marginalized and suppressed in his society. The Matthean Jesus lays stress on the responsibility for taking care of them on the Christian community. In this perspective, good deeds are counted as a crucial factor in the due compensation in the last judgement. Since the Matthean emphasis on good deeds is properly understood as a pious virtue of tzedaka, the parable intends to highlight social solidarity in light of the traditional Jewish virtue.
