서양 그리스도교의 주류 신관으로서 초자연적 유신론은 각 존재의 독립성을 인정하는 실체론에 기초한 철학적 신론으로 그리스도교의 신학을 지탱하는 원형적 관념이었다. 이러한 관념에서 신(神)은 현실 세계로부터 물러서서 완벽하게 독존성(獨存性)을유지한 존재이기 때문에 신의 초월성은 필연적인 것으로, 신의 내재성은 선택적인 것으로 이해된다. 서양의 전통적 신관은 자연과 동떨어진 신의 초자연적 거주방식으로서‘신의 초월성’이라는 필연적 존재방식을 설명하기 위해 자연과 초자연을 구분하는‘초자연적 이원론’(二元論)에 기초하고 있다. 이와는 달리 본 논문은 새로운 신관의 유형, 즉 틱낫한의 대승불교적 관점을 빌어신관을 재해석하는 종교해방신학자 폴 니터의 ‘상호존재’(interbeing) 개념을 중심으로불이론(不二論)에 기초한 새로운 ‘상호존재 신론’(interbeing-theism)을 제시하고자 한다. 틱낫한에 따르면, ‘존재’를 의미하는 ‘being’은 자존적 실체에 근거한 아(我)이므로 불교의 연기(緣起)와 공(空)의 법칙에 정면으로 위배된다. 모든 존재의 무실체성에 근거한사물과 현상의 연기, 즉 공을 바탕으로 한 ‘상호존재’의 관점에서 세계를 이해할 때유한과 무한, 생과 사, 열반과 번뇌, 나와 너라는 이분법을 넘어 만물이 불이하다는사실을 각성하게 된다고 한다. 반면, 신학자 폴 니터는 불교와의 조우를 통해 틱낫한의 연기와 공에 해당하는 ‘상호존재’이라는 개념에 기초하여 이원론에 근거한 전통적그리스도교의 초월적 유신론을 비판하고, ‘상호존재’를 하느님으로 묘사하면서 불이적신관을 제시한다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 ‘interbeing’을 하느님으로 제시하는 니터의 신관을 확장하여 ‘상호존재-하느님’(interbeing-God)을 기초로 ‘상호존재 신론’(interbeing-theism)이라는 새로운 유형의 신관을 조어하고자 한다. 이는 기존의 서양적 조어(造語)로 탄생한다양한 신관 범주들-다신론(polytheism), 단신론(henotheism), 유일신론(monotheism), 범신론(pantheism), 범재신론(panentheism), 무신론(atheism) 등-을 벗어나 동양과 서양의 종교경험을 함께 통찰할 수 있는 새로운 유형의 통합적 신관이 정립될 수 있는 이론적 가능성을 모색한다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.
Abstract
The supernatural theism as a mainstream view of god in western and Christian society is the archetype of Christian theology, a philosophical theism based on the substantialism which admits an independent trait of each being. In this thought, the supernaturality of god is necessary, but its immanence is selective because it exists away from the real world with the perfectly independent being. This western traditional viewpoint of god is based on a supernatural dualism that distinguishes nature from the supernatural in order to explain how the god exists supernaturally, keeping distant from the nature. Unlike such tradition, the paper tries to suggest a non-dualistic interbeing-theism, which is built newly by Paul F. Knitter’s concept of interbeing and his reinterpretation of Thich Nhat Hanh’s view of dependent co-arising or emptiness. According to Thich’s explanation, the concept of ‘being’ is necessarily contradictory to both the theory of dependent co-arising and the law of emptiness because it means the self as a self-existing subject. When this world can be observed in the light of ‘inter-being’ in which the law of emptiness and dependent co-arising assume the nothingness of all beings, the fact is enlightened that all things are not different beyond the dualism of the finite and the infinite, life and death, nirvana and suffering, or you and me. Meanwhile, Paul Knitter, a leading theologian of religious pluralism, suggests his non-dual viewpoint of god, criticizing a supernatural theism of the traditional Christianity. He describes god as inter-being through encountering with Thich’s thoughts of inter-being and emptiness. In this context, the paper tries to develop and expand Knitter’s interbeing-god by means of theorizing a new typology of interbeing-theism. This effort will contribute to advancing a new integrative typology of theism to provide a consistent insight of religious thoughts in the West and the East, which cannot be expected to various western categories such as polytheism, henotheism, monotheism, pantheism, panentheism, and atheism.
