한국 개신교계 최근 변화의 동향과 그 의미 종교사회학적 관점

이글은 현대 한국 사회에서 불교와 가톨릭과 함께 3대 종교로서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 개신교계 내부에서 최근 일어나고 있는 종교문화 곧, 종교적 성향 측면의 변화가 드러내는 종교사회학적 의미를 밝힌 것이다. 필자는 이 글에서 다음 두 가지 변화에 주목하였고, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 최근 특히 2007년 아프간 피랍사태이후 한국 교회에 제기된 외부의 공격에 대한 반작용 혹은 방어기제로서 이슬람포비아 담론의 출현으로 상징되듯 종교적 근본주의의 강화 곧, 영적 전투의 세계관의 심화 및 확대가 뚜렷이 나타나고 있다. 둘째, 최근 집단주의로부터 개인주의로의 전환으로 표상되는 포스트모던의 문화 흐름에 힘입어 한국 교회 내부에 개인주의적, 체험적 신앙에 관한 관심이 한층 증가하였고, 그로부터 최근 오순절 성령운동의 치유사역자 손기철 장로가 주도하는 헤븐리 터치 미니스트리(HTM)의 대중적 인기가 예증하듯 관념적(사변적, 교조적) 신앙보다는 영성의 추구 및 성령과의 직접적 만남 혹은 접촉 등에 대한 열망이 고조되고 있다.
Abstract
To explore the significance of recent changes in Korean Protestantism in terms of religious culture or religious orientation, I have focused on the important shifts within the contemporary Korean Protestant church and have investigated their implications from the perspective of the sociology of religion. First, the 2007 South Korean hostage crisis in Afghanistan, in which the aggressive Christian evangelicalism was harshly chastised by the Korean Society, has prompted the so-called 'Islamophobia' as a reaction or as a possible defense mechanism on the part of Pentecostal/Evangelical wing of the Korean church. Consequently, religious fundamentalism (or the world-view of spiritual warfare) does not seem to be fading but instead emboldening in Korean Protestantism. Second, influenced by postmodern currents switching from collectivism to individualism, Korean lay Christians prefer experiential, individualistic faith or what Harvey Cox calls 'primal spirituality' to dogmatic, ideational belief. The popularity of the Heavenly Touch Ministry (HTM) by charismatic faith-healer Elder Ki Chol Son attests this.
