Abstract
The purpose of this article is to establish the fact that the center of Leviticus is chapter 16 by examining the interrelationship between two narratives (ch. 10; 24:10-23) and chapter 16. For this purpose, this study has been done based upon the Hebrew texts as the final form from a synchronic/literary perspective. First, we looked at the relationship between Leviticus chapter 10 (the Nadab and Abihu incident) and chapter 16. By mentioning ‘death’ three times in Leviticus 16:1-2, it warns the danger of approaching before the Lord and emphasizes that the Day of Atonement is a very solemn ceremony to be observed. Also, Nadab and Abihu were not able to distinguish, so they were punished for bringing ‘strange fire’ to Yahweh, and so Leviticus 10:10 refers to the importance of distinction as purity () and holiness. Therefore, Leviticus 16:1 foreshadows ‘purity’ received on that Day and implies the possibility of ‘holy life’ through that. Next, we looked at the relationship between Leviticus 24:10-23 (the case of the blaspheming son) and chapter 16. The narrative of the blaspheming son is in parallel with the Azazel goat ceremony in chapter 16, due to the fact that both ‘sin’ and ‘head’ are used in the context of the curse, and the analogous terms are used in parallel. The narrative shows that through ordaining him by the witnesses and then stoning him by the people he bears his sin and the punishment for it. This is in parallel with the doom of the live goat in the Day of Atonement and emphasizes the removal of all sins of Israel from the camp. The two great axes of Leviticus are the holy ritual laws (ch. 1-15) and the holy life laws (ch. 17-27), an example of the former being the case of Nadab and Abihu, and an example of the latter being the incident involving the blaspheming son. The fact that these two narratives, which link the two axes of Leviticus, are mentioned and paralleled respectively in the Day of Atonement (ch. 16) shows that Leviticus 16 best describes the key theme of ‘holiness’ and is also the center of Leviticus in the literary structure.
