A Missiological Appraisal of the Contemporary Korean Church

This study attempts to analyze the phenomena of the contemporary Korean Church from the missiological perspective. This study suggests that the comtemporary Korean Church faces challenges from both inside and outside. The challenges from within the church includes the disunity and disputes of the church,worship that lacks life, megachurches and their successions of the leadership, praises that seek emotional satisfaction not spiritual growth. The challeges from outside of the church is society's antagonism against the church. However, there are attempts within the church that seek the reformation and revival of the comtemporary Korean church and Jonghyun Chang is one of the key figures of this movement. This study, then, turns to the revival and growth of the early Korean church and the secrets to this phenomenon. It sketches the revival movement of the Korean church in the very early 20th century and suggests that the self-support of the Korean church and the godly life of the Korean Christians were the secrets to such a phenomenon. This study provides a number of strategies on how the Korean church to transform into a missional church: 1) life-giving church, 2)life-changing preaching ministry, 3) being salt and light in the society. This study argues that, when the church is the church, the church is a mission to accomplish.
