세계복음주의연맹(WEA)의 설립 배경과 과정에 대한 역사-신학적 고찰

초록

세계복음주의연맹(WEA)은 복음증거와 제자도를 위한 복음주의자들의 전 세계적인 연대이며, 또한 복음의 능력을 통하여 전 세계적인 변혁과 증거를 추구하는 기관이다. WEA는 성경적인 원칙들에 근거하여 설립되었으며, 그 사역도 성경적이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 최근 들어 WEA는 여러 가지 국제적인 문제들을 해결하는데에 있어서 로만 가톨릭 교회(RCC)와 세계교회협의회(WCC)와 연대한 적이 있는데, 이러한 일로 인하여 WEA가 원래 추구했던 신학적 입장과 성경적 가르침에 근거한 선교적 사명을 포기한 것이 아닌가 하는 비판에 직면하였다. 초기부터 WEA는 세속주의, 물질주의, 전체주의 등과 같은 문제들에 대해 저항해 왔으며, 협력 사역을 위하여 RCC와 WCC와 연대한 것을 복음주의적 입장을 상실한 것으로 간주해서는 안 될 것이다. WEA의 역사적 기원과 신학적 입장 등을 면밀하게 검토해 본 결과, 여전히 충실하게 유지하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러나 사역의 연대를 시도하면서, 신학적 정체성을 상실해서는 안 될 것이라는 경각심을 제고(提高)할 필요가 있다.

Abstract

World Evangelical Alliance(WEA) is a global network of evangelicals that try to unite churches for Gospel witness and discipleship and also it pursues a global transformation, witness and discipleship by Gospel. WEA was founded on biblical principles, and its ministry is biblically based. However, in this pursuit, WEA has been associated with Roman Catholic Church(RCC) and World Council of Churches(WCC) for pursuing several global issues over the last two decades, by which WEA has been criticized for abandoning its original faith and mission statements corresponded to the biblical teaching. Since its main goal of WEA is the involvement in global issues resisting to secularism, materialism, totalitarianism, and so on, its association with RCC and WCC is not to be regarded as an abandonment of its evangelical stance. As a result of a careful reviewing of its historical origin and theological statements, WEA has kept its statement of faith. But it is also important to keep its theological identity, while it attempts at solidarity with other organizations.
