1920년대 <산송장>의 번역과 공연에 관한 연구 - 토월회 <산송장> 공연 상황을 중심으로

토월회는 제2회 공연을 통해 관객의 호응과 상업적 흥행 가능성을 확인했다. 신극에 대한 연구와 새로운 공연 문화 확립을 위해 조선에서의 공연을 감행했을 때만 해도 토월회의 관심은 신극적 이상의 실현과 그 전파였다. 이때의 관객은 능동적인 주체라기보다는 수동적인 관람 대상에 가까웠다. 하지만 제2회 공연에서의 성공 압박과 그 실현을 통해 관객의 취향을 반영하고 상업적 이익을 추구하는 공연을 지향하게 되었고, 결과적으로는 연극적 완성도와 함께 대중의 취향을 동시에 겨냥하는 레퍼토리의 필요성이 대두되었다. 기존의 <카추샤>와 <알크 하이델베르크>를 잇는 대작(장막) 연극 레퍼토리도 크게 요구되었다. 그 결과 제5회 정기공연에서 토월회는 톨스토이 원작을 축약 번역한 <산송장>을 발표할 수 있었다. 이 공연은 눈물의 감상성, 음악의 경쾌함, 사랑에 의한 자기 희생 등으로 일반 관객이 집중할 수 있는 취향을 지니면서도, 톨스토이의 원작의 품위를 고수할 수 있는 양자적 선택이었다고 해야 한다.
Abstract
Through the second performance of Towolhoe, the audience's response and commercial success were confirmed. Even when performances in Joseon were conducted for research on Singeug(Modern drama) and establishment of a new performance culture, Towolhoe was interested in the realization and spread of Singeug. The audience at this time was more like a passive audience than an active subject. However, due to the box office pressure in the second performance, Towolhoe had no choice but to pursue a performance that reflects the taste of the audience and pursues commercial interests. As a result, Towolhoe had no choice but to realize the need for a performance that aimed both the perfection of the work and the taste of the public at the same time. After the 3rd performance, Towolhoe could not help but crave for itself a large-scale play(curtain play) that made the success of the existing Resurrection and Alt Heidelberg. As a result, for the 5th regular performance, Towolhoe selected Sansongjang, a shortened translation of Leo Tolstoy's original work. The performance of Sansongjang was filled with the theater requirements such as sentimentality of tears, lightness of music, and self-sacrifice through love. It must be said that it was a bilateral choice that did not lose the dignity of Tolstoy's original work while having a performance taste that the general audience could focus on.
