유가족다움의 사회적 낙인과 대응 전략: 세월호 참사 단원고 희생학생 부모의 경험과 사회적 치유를 중심으로

본고는 재난참사의 사회적 치유 방안을 모색하기 위해 기획됐다. 이를 위해 2차 가해 중 하나인 유가족다움의 사회적 낙인에 대한 세월호 참사 유가족들의 대응을 다룬다. 참사 이후 유가족들은 진상규명을 위해 공적 논쟁에 장에 진입했는데, 사회적 권력에 의해 일상적 유가족다움과 탈정치화된 유가족다움을 강요받았다. 일상적 유가족다움이 일정한 감정, 태도, 행동을 강요하며 피해자의 무고함, 순수성, 도덕성을 요구하는 것이라면, 탈정치화된 유가족다움은 익명화, 순응화, 고립화를 통해 이들의 정치 참여를 억압하며 삶의 자율성과 존엄을 훼손해왔다. 유가족들은 진상규명을 위한 전략으로 탈정치화된 유가족다움을 거부하고, 일상적 유가족다움에는 △내면화를 통한 검열, 단속 △사회적 고립, 패싱, 커버링 △사회적 자원화 △저항과 해체 등으로 대응해왔다. 권력에 대한 통렬한 통찰과 함께 △희생된 자녀 △4·16가족협의회 △애도하는 시민들과의 만남은 탈정치화된 유가족다움은 물론이고 일상적 유가족다움에 저항하고 이를 해체하는 중요한 동력으로 작동했다. 유가족다움의 사회적 낙인을 해소하기 위해서는 △유가족다움을 권력 작용의 산물로 접근하고 △진상규명 및 피해회복 등에 대한 유가족들의 권리를 보장하고 △유가족들에 대한 사회적 인식전환이 필요하다. 이것이 기반이 될때 유가족과 고인의 명예가 회복되고, 무너진 사회적 신뢰를 재건해 삶이 회복되는 사회적 치유의 가능성이 열린다.
Abstract
The study is intended to explore ways of social healing for the Sewol Ferry Disaster. The study investigates the response by the bereaved of Sewol Ferry Disaster to the social stigma of 'befitting the bereaved', which constitutes a secondary violence. With the occurrence of the Disaster, the bereaved families entered the realm of public controversy in order to investigate and reveal the truth. However, the families were forced by the social power to have attitudes that are regarded as befitting the bereaved in routinized and de-politicized terms. To be specific, the social power forced the bereaved families to have certain types of emotions, attitudes and behavior, on the one hand. It oppressed political participation by the families using such tools as anonymization, adaptation and isolation, thereby degrading their autonomy and dignity, on the other hand. Responding to this, the families of the victims refused to remain de-politicized as a strategy to find the truth. In order to fight against the routinized image of the bereaved, they took on a variety of strategies including censorship and regulation through internalization; social isolation, passing and covering; social resources strategy; and resistance and deconstruction. Such factors as victimized children, the 4.16 Family Association, and meetings with condolences-offering citizens, as well as severe insight into power, served as major power to resist and deconstruct not only the routinized but also the de-politicized image of bereaved families. In order to resolve the social branding of 'befitting the bereaved', first of all, it is necessary to see the demand for attitudes that are regarded as befitting the bereaved as a product of power games. Secondly, it is needed to guarantee the right of the bereaved to truth revealing and damage recovery. And thirdly, a transition in social awareness is necessary towards the bereaved. When these conditions are satisfied, the dignity of the bereaved, along with that of the victims, will be recovered, and social trust that has collapsed will be reconstructed, upon which the possibility of social healing will be opened and accordingly life will be recovered.
