Abstract

Museums nowadays are expected to exist as cultural platforms for social interaction, rather than as a mere public education institutions based on their unique contents and expertise. In this aspect, there have been various attempts to strengthen the museums’ social role by engaging general public with the museums’internal function through online platform. This phenomena is related with the rise of the concept and practices of‘crowdsourcing’, the term first coined by Jeff Howe in 2006 and is defined as“the act of taking a task traditionally performed by a designated agent and outsourcing it by making an open call to an undefined but large group of people.” In this paper, practices and prospects of the crowdsourcing based curating were explored in a museum context through a theoretical examination and case studies. Three exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, New York(<Click! A Crowd Curated Exhibition>), the ARKO Museum, Seoul(<Kang Ik Joong: the Things that I know>), the Kyunggi Museum of Modern Art, Kyunggi-do(<Tagging Art Works>) were selected as the cases that incorporated the various types of crowdsourcing in the process of curating. Through the reviews of documents and related literature, and interviews with the curators, the cases were analyzed for in-depth understanding of the practices of crowdsourcing based exhibitions. Based on the case studies, meanings and prospects of the crowdsourcing based exhibition were examined in three inter-related issues.
