A Study on an Analysis of Multicultural Text in the Elementary School Textbooks

The purpose of this article is to provide appropriate guidelines for the selection of multicultural text for future textbooks. The article analyzes the characteristics of multicultural text from elementary school Korean language, Moral, and Social Studies textbooks which were written based on the 2007 revised curriculum. According to this analysis, first, there were some texts that portray negative aspects of the multicultural family and showed them in a sympathetic perspective. Second, the images of various multicultural families and countries were shown differently depending on country and race. Third, for multicultural content factors, cultural diversity was shown most frequently. In conclusion this article is meaningful, in that it provided the guidelines for selecting and including multicultural text in textbooks, after defining multicultural education in the narrow sense considering the Korean situation, and analyzing the content according to the analysis criteria. This work can help to create more discussion on multicultural education in curricula and within national level textbooks and can become an important reference for selecting multicultural text in the future.
