objectives:Metabolic syndrome(MS) is a prevalent disorder in psychiatric patients, yet limited data exist on its prevalence and risk factors in Korean patients with schizophrenia. Methods:This study was conducted from September 2008 to January 2009 and included 970 inpatients with schizophrenia from two mental hospitals in Yong-in city. Assessment of MS was performed based on American Heart Association criteria using modified abdominal obesity threshold of 90cm for men, 85cm for women. Comparative analysis was performed using age- and gender matched sample from KHANES III. For evaluating risk factors, analysis included 766 inpatients taking consistent medications at least for 30 days. Results:MS prevalence was 26.2%, being higher in women(p < 0.001). Compared to general population, prevalence of inpatients was significantly high in female(p = 0.023), low in male(p < 0.001) and overall patients(p = 0.030). As to each metabolic parameters, abdominal obesity was more prevalent in patients(p <0.001), but others are equally or more prevalent in general population. After multivariate analysis, female gender and old age remained as risk factors of MS. Conclusions:The prevalence of MS of inpatients with schizophrenia was 26.2% and significantly low compared to general population. Female gender and old age were risk factors of MS.
