Abstract

Music therapy employs music as a therapeutic tool to facilitate non-musical changes, grounded in the premise that all individuals possess an intrinsic motivation to achieve self-realization through musical experiences. The multidimensional self-realization of music therapists is critical to harnessing the unique therapeutic potential of music. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of spontaneity, freedom, and uniqueness—key components of musical realization—among prospective music therapists. A total of 202 participants completed a survey, and the data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation, one-way ANOVA, and MANOVA with SPSS Statistics 26.0. The findings revealed significant positive correlations between spontaneity, freedom, and uniqueness in musical realization as perceived both individually and from the perspective of a therapist. Furthermore, recognition levels varied based on participants’ time spent listening to music, their undergraduate major in music, and their clinical practice experience. These results underscore the importance of prospective music therapists consistently engaging in experiences of musical realization to cultivate professional competencies and deliver meaningful musical experiences to clients in future clinical settings.
