Abstract
JeonNam province accounts for 56% of the total islands in South Korea and 49% of the national coastal passenger traffic. The island's forest landscape, along with the coastal landscape, is one of the main landscape services that provide habitats for rare and native species, as well as water resources, windbreak forests, and fishery forests, and offer visual beauty to tourists visiting the islands. This study aimed to determine the spatial distribution of aesthetic forest landscape resources visible from passenger ship routes around the islands of JeonNam province and provide directions for decision-making in island forest management. Visibility analysis was conducted by inputting elevation information from a digital elevation model (DEM) and stand height data from a forest type map to create a digital surface model (DSM). Passenger routes and weather-based visibility ranges were also inputted to analyze the realistic visibility areas of island forests. As a result, it was confirmed that 53% of the total island area of 192,540 ha in JeonNam province had visible areas covering 75,183 ha of forests. The area of forest stands within the visible area varied among islands. Including all types of forests, Jindo had the widest area, followed by Dolsan and Wando. Deciduous forests were most prominent on Geogeum-do and Wando, while Dolsan-do and Wando had the most evergreen forests. Mixed forests had a high presence on Geogeum-do and Dolsan-do. The spatial distribution of island forest landscape resources showed high landscape values in four areas: between Jindo and Sinui Island, between Dolsan-do and Namhae-do, between Wando and Daemo-do, between Soan-do and Daemo-do , and in the region around Sinan. Among these, deciduous forests exhibited high landscape values between Dolsan-do and Namhae-do, and between Jindo and Sinui-do. Evergreen forests showed high landscape values between Wando and Daemo-do, and between Jindo, Sinui-do, and Jangsan-do. Mixed forests had high landscape values in the region around Sinan. There is a growing trend towards the demand for the aesthetic value of landscape services and the consideration of this in forest management decision-making systems. Therefore, there is a need for detailed and quantified components of landscape services in the future.
