Abstract

The study was designed as a first step to look at how African literature was accepted in Korea. We want to examine the current status of the South African novel and raise future challenges. South Africa is the most translated African country in Korean. African literature was introduced as an abstract image of wildness, beauty, starvation, disease, conflict, etc. This study was intended to contribute to access to the reality of complex and multilayered African literature beyond the existing distorted perception of African literature. The South African novel reflects the complex and diverse aspects of Africa. Writers include not only blacks but whites and people of mixed race. Novels are created in English, Afrikaans and tribal languages. Translated into Korea is mostly works created in English by white people. The current status of the translation of a novel is as follows. Thirty-five novels of 11 authors have been translated. Among them, six are white writers. There are many novels by John Maxwell Coetzee. In the case of short stories, 13 works were introduced, with the exception of the writer of long novels. Only one copy has been translated. In addition, the consideration of writers and works introduced in the study of South African novels reveals a distinct difference between foreign and Korean researchers. This translation situation serves as a difficulty in understanding a wide range of South African novels. A list of translated works is needed. Research on works should also be done. It will have to select works for translation through joint research by South African and Korean researchers. This process of accepting African literature could contribute to the achievement of the universality of Korean literature.
