Abstract
Modern picture books are widely used as introductory sanctions for elementary school literature education, but systematic discussions on educational plans are insufficient in terms of multimodality. The purpose of this study is to discuss ways to expand literary education by analyzing the multimodality of modern picture books from the perspective of Roland Barth’s code interpretation. Modern picture books are highly interactive text woven by text and picture, and readers should make challenging reading to fill the gaps in the semantic composition formed in the tension between text and picture. For this multi-modality analysis, the case of Roland Barth’s code analysis shown in "S/Z" was used as a mechanism to analyze the multi-modality of picture books. Roland Bart tried to reflectively think about an individual’s semantic system that recognizes objects or phenomena by recognizing the mythologies contained in symbols through denotative meaning and notative meaning analysis. According to Roland Barth’s five codes(interpretation code, behavioral code, cultural code, minor code, symbolic code), representative works of modern picture books were analyzed and suggested as educational methods to fill empty spots, interpret voices outside the scene, participate in self-citation play, and understand subrogation meaning. These strategies are expected to provide a meaningful foundation as a way to expand literary education that educates multimodality through modern picture books.
