Abstract

A crucial characteristic of national literature in which Shin Chae-ho's literary works have is the use of ethno-language. "Eul-Ji-Mun-Deok," one of his works, was written in a mixed style of Korean with Chinese characters at first but republished in the edition of Korean translation. Another work of "Hero, Lee Sun-sin" was published serially with just writing style of Korean character in the newspaper of 'Taehan Maeil Daily.' And he tried to emphasize social and cultural functions of Korean novels through the form of essay literature. Currently, ethno-language in North Korea is recognized as an element of making aware of national self-esteem and dignity and of mustering ethnic solidarity. Positive main characters depicted in his works are roughly divided into two types with the 1919 Independence Movement of Korea as the starting point. The two specific groups are heros and the people. His biographical work, "Dream-sky," was interested in depicting the shape of positive heros and his last work, "Great Fierce Battle Between Two Dragons," was focused on the shape of negative heros. With regard to subjects, "Dream-sky" gave weight on patriotism headed by heroic characters, while "Great Fierce Battle Between Two Dragons" brought out the suppressive atrocities of negative characters against the populace into relief and the work finally ended in complete destruction of the negative characters and relative ostentation of the people's capabilities. Victory of positive characters and collapse of negative ones show the figure of legitimate and reasonable historical developments. Therefore, fantastic characters and events appeared in his novels were used to efficiently represent the intrinsic nature of practical matters rather than to obscurely display a dreamy world.
