Abstract
This study aimed to identify the effect of Christianity, as a protecting factor against suicide ideation among university students and to find out whether this effect was mediated by spiritual well-being and social support. In order to analyze these, 418 university students from one university in Chungnam were surveyed in December, 2012. The study results found that Christians had less suicidal ideation than those who had no religion. It was also found that the difference in suicidal ideation between Christians and non-religious group was mediated by both religious well-being and existential well-being which were the two sub-constructs of spiritual well-being. At the same time, religious well-being or religious commitment had a greater mediating effect than existential well-being. This reflects the characteristics of Christianity stressing more on the relationship between God and an individual than the one between an individual and others or a community. Meanwhile, Christians were not different from non-religious group in the level of social support and thus social support was not a mediator between being a Christian and suicidal ideation. This implies that the fellowship among church members should be the one where members can obtain practical supports from it.
