Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the direction of change in the education and re-education system of Christian alternative school teachers. A survey was conducted on 331 Christian alternative school teachers from 27 schools. An in-depth interview was conducted for eight teachers who are working at Christian Alternative School or had working experiences and three experts in related fields. The results of the survey analysis are as follows: there was a demand for systematization of the training course to become an alternative school teacher, organized by the Christian Alternative Education Association rather than by the existing teachers' group. On the other hand, there were many opinions that the experience of teacher training courses and working experience in public education helped teachers at alternative schools perform their duties. However, groups with experience in public education gave somewhat negative assessments of qualifications, teacher training, and public education experiences, compared to the groups without public education. As a result of the interview analysis, Christian alternative schools had two conflicting opinions that there was an environment that stimulated teachers' growth compared to public education, and that it was difficult for them to grow due to the outflow of excellent human resources due to poor conditions. Interviewees emphasized the integration of the curriculum, transformationality, spirituality and personality, calling consciousness, teacher professionalism, and interpersonal skills that integrate the Christian world view as necessary expertise and qualities for Christian alternative school teachers. The difficult elements of Christians' adaptation to the field are presented on an individual and school levels. Based on these findings, an applicable alternative was presented.
