다원적 자유 민주주의 사회에 적합한 종교교육 유형 탐구

다원적 자유 민주주의 사회에서의 종교교육은 그 유형과 방식이 매우 다양하다. 이러한 맥락에서 종교교육을 논의한다는 것은 그것이 어떤 형태가 되었든, 어떤 형식의 종교교육을 떠올리든 종교가 공적영역(공론장)에 참여하는 것에 관한 논의이다. 본 논문에서는 다원적 자유 민주주의 사회에서 종교를 가르쳐야 하는 이유와 적합한 유형을 탐구하기 위해 그 배경이 되는 다원주의, 공공신학, 종교교육의 제 유형을 검토하였다. 그리고 존 화이트, 브릭하우스, 드 뤼터와 메리의 종교교육에 관한 논의를 바탕으로 타당한 종교교육 유형을 탐구하였다. 오늘날 다원화된 자유 민주주의 사회에서 공동선 추구, 공동체 의식 내지 역량은 학생들이 웰빙을 영위하는 데 매우 중요한 역량 중 하나이다. 다원적 자유 민주주의 사회에서 종교는 하나의 지식으로 다루어져야 하며, 이때 종교교육은 종교 내지 세계관들 사이의 표층적인 차이와 문화의 다양성을 단순히 이해하는 수준에 그쳐서는 안 된다. 종교교육은 타자와의 만남과 상호존중을 전제로 한 열린 대화를 통해 진정한 자기 이해와 공공적 잘삶을 위한 포용성을 갖추는 데까지 나아가야 한다. 여러 가지 신앙에의 확신이 공존하는 다원주의 상황에서 진리에 관한 질문을 던지는 학생들의 동행이 되어 주는 것은 대단히 중요하며, 타자와의 차이를 무시하거나 피하지 않고 직시하도록 하는 교육의 책무이기도 하다.
Abstract
Religious education in a plural liberal democratic society is very diverse in its types and methods. Discussing religious education in our society is a discussion about religion's participation in the public sphere, no matter what form it takes or what form of religious education comes to mind. This paper examines pluralism and public theology as the background of religious education. I distinguish between three types of religious education, White, Brighouse, and De Ruyter and Merry and explore which ones are appropriate for our society. In today's context, the pursuit of public goods, cooperation competency is one of the very important them for students to achieve well-being. In a plural democratic society, religion should be treated as a public form of knowledge, and in this case, religious education should not be limited to simply understanding the superficial differences between religions or worldviews and cultural diversity. Religious education must advance to achieving true self-understanding and inclusiveness for a good public life through encounters with others and open discussions based on the premise of mutual respect. In a plural situation where various beliefs coexist, it is very important to be a companion to students who ask questions about the truth, and it is also an educational responsibility to enable them to face differences with others rather than ignore or avoid them.
