Abstract
Under the influence of the women's liberation movement of the late '60s, mainly in the past 20 years, feminist scientists and philosophers have expressed great interest in the subject of 'the androcentric nature of science'. In philosophers’ attempting to reveal and resolve the connectedness of the masculinity to science, the notion of “feminist science” was brought into discussion as a potential replacement of masculine science. S. Harding, one of the philosophers that has questioned the validity of masculine science, criticizes the Western model of science and knowledge within the frame of multiculturalism. She regards the Western science as a product of white, heterosexual men and criticizes it as giving undue authority to their male-centric perspective, mode of observation, and understanding. Meanwhile, S. Haack criticizes Harding's countercultural claim against Western androcentric science for having its own set of pitfalls. Haack warns that if multiculturalism rejects all comparisons and even denies the possibility of distinguishing between inquiry and advocacy, feminist science critiques are subject to degenerate into uncritical relativism. Such erroneous feminist science critiques are dangerous since they can potentially debase scientific inquiries to “social negotiations,” distort knowledge into “propaganda,” and eventually dismantle science as mere “ideology.”Understanding the potential pitfalls and challenges to feminist science critiques, this paper attempts to clarify the objectives of feminist science and provide justifications for feminist critiques of science. In supporting Harding's countercultural claim, I contend that Harding’s position is not to be interpreted as extreme and seek to provide justifications for Harding’s position and basis of argument while reiterating the practical significance of her ideas. The main argument of this paper is that feminist science should not replicate the errors of masculine science in asserting female-centric perspectives, modes of observation, and understanding solely based on female experiences. Those in support of feminist science strongly believe in its potential to be able to balance masculine science to render science as more comprehensive, unbiased. While focusing on the possibility of a yet another science in addition to masculine- and feminine- sciences, this paper concludes by emphasizing that feminist science does not undermine scientific objectivity: on the contrary, methods and strategies of feminist critiques of science strengthen scientific standards of good evidence and open debate, thus fostering the stronger objectivity. When all potential pitfalls are addressed, the ideal feminist science can serve to provide a new set of scientific tradition and practices that elitist- or expert-oriented science has failed to offer, and can promote a diversity in perception.
