Abstract
In this article, I examine several ontological claims of sex and sexuality and suggest that sex is the kernel as deviance and contradiction inherent in Being, from which I draw the political implication. It appears that in recent years newly emerging ontologies, such as new materialism, speculative realism or object-oriented ontology, are the theoretical reaction of the predominant philosophical discourses that prioritize culture/discourse rather than nature/matter. Likewise, some feminists try to constitute new ideas that may theorize the material/corporeal activity or agency of the real, embracing non-human as well as human species, so that they might replace the contemporary gender theory by, for instance, Judith Butler. However, I seldom find among them arguments that take sex and sexuality in ontological way, though these are central in feminism. Thus, I argue that it is the link between ontology and sex that we should elaborate to find the fundamental impasse in feminist theories. For this, I first explore a new materialist argument of sex in Karen Barad, contesting its ‘not-new’ materialist aspects, and point to the unique notion of sex in Elizabeth Grosz’s reading of Darwin. And then I show that sex is the kernel as contradiction through Zupančič’s reconstitution of sexual drive which is Freud’s most controversial concept.
