Abstract
In 1940, Manseon Ilbo (滿鮮日報) serialized a total of 21 editorials titled New Proposals for the Construction of Manchurian Korean Literature (1940.1. 12~2. 6). Around the same time, in January 1940, the Shengjing Times (盛京時報) newly organized a literary column to provide space for new literature, and a series of Chinese literary magazines, also began to occasionally publish editorials on ‘Manchurian literature.’ In the same year, Dongdu Books Xinjing Publishing House published the volume Study of Manchurian Literature, which compiled a series of discussions surrounding the construction of “Manchurian Literature. On the surface, the discourse on the construction of ‘Manchurian literature’ appears to have emerged around 1940, but the core concept of this discourse, ‘Manchurian literature,’ was raised much earlier. The concept of ‘Manchurian literature’ was first raised among Japanese writers around the time of the founding of Manchukuo, and for a long time discussions progressed in relation to other literatures such as ‘founding literature’ and ‘continental development literature.’ This paper will examine the Manchurian context in which the discourse on ‘construction of Manchurian literature’ began to emerge around 1940 by focusing on this literary phenomenon, and further examine how intellectuals and writers from the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan each accepted/interpreted ‘Manchurian literature’ differently. This study will allow us to confirm the ideal of ‘Manchurian literature’ that Manchukuo pursued, and through confirmation of this insubstantial ‘ideal,’ we will be able to confirm the existence mode of literature in a colonial situation, as well as the ‘Concord(協和)’ of Manchukuo that could not be completed and its illusion.
