The study examines the modernities of traditional musical theaters in Northeast Asia as cases of cultural hybridization in the early 20th century. For concluding the multiple modernities, it compares the modernizing processes between Changgeuk, Peking opera and Kabuki. In terms of the meeting of East and West, the processes seem similar but each context and consequence of them is different. While Peking Opera and Kabuki strengthened the formalization of national cultures, Changgeuk did not. The study argues that Changgeuk has a relative potential as a contemporary performing art due to its openness and flexibility.
Abstract
