이 연구는 디테일을 다루는 방법, 쓰레기(와 같이 가치 없어 보이는 것)를 관찰하는 기술에 대해 살펴본다. 우선 도시 공간에 대한 탁월한 지식을 가진 사람의 대명사라 할 도시 산책자의 한 가지 유형인 추리소설 속 탐정이 어떻게 걷고 관찰하는지를 살펴보고 이것이 일상생활의 문화 연구의 방법론으로 활용 가능한지를 검토해보고자 한다. 사소한 것도 결코 놓치지 않는 셜록 홈즈의 관찰과 추리의 기술은 우리가 일상생활의 도시 문화를 연구하는데 일정 부분 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다. 우리가 살고 있는 끊임없이 변화하는 도시 공간은 거시적이고 장기적인 해석의 틀로는 포착되기 어려운 요소들을 많이 포함하고 있어서 새로운 형태의 연구 방법론을 요청하기 때문이다. 모든 것이 순식간에 쓰레기가 되고 마는 현대 도시 공간 속에서 남겨진 파편과 흔적들을 추적하며 당대의 시대정신과 망탈리테를 재구성하는 방법을 검토해 본다. 민족지와 미시사 등을 활용한 도시민속학은 세밀한 관찰과 수집을 통해 단순히 물건이 가진 유용성이나 물질성이 아니라 인간의 삶이 묻어난 물건들의 세계가 제공하는 지식을발견할 수 있는 가능성을 모색해 본다. 그리고 우리는 이 지식을 바탕으로 도시공간의 다양한 측면을 재조명하고 이에 관한 새로운 내러티브를 구축해 낼 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study discusses how sociology treats detail and observesvalueless things, such as trash. First, we examine how detectives indetective stories observe odds and ends; the detective exemplifies theflaneur and possesses an excellent knowledge of urban space. Thispaper focuses on the observational and inferential method used bySherlock Holmes, and the potential usefulness of this method in thestudy of urban culture and everyday life. Urban space contains manyelements that cannot be understood within the large-scale frameworksand long-term cycles typically involved in sociological analysis. A new,different analytical framework is required, and this paper proposesurban folklore as an alternative method for the study of urban space. In the context of the modern city, where things take only a momentto become trash, we examine the potential of urban folklore as amethod: we track the detail, follow the tracks of trash, and elicit thementality and spirit of the age. By appropriating ethnographic andmicrohistorical methods by using participant observation of urbaneveryday life, we discover not only the materiality and utility of things but also the knowledge given by things that bear the traces of human life. This knowledge reveals various aspects of society, and enables a new narrative of urban space to be constructed.
