Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of combining upper thoracic joint mobilization and self-mobilization exercises on pain reduction, cervical range of motion (ROM), and functional improvement in adults with non-specific neck pain (NNP). A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 30 adults diagnosed with chronic NNP who met the inclusion criteria at an orthopedic clinic in Daegu, South Korea. Participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n = 15), which received both upper thoracic mobilization and self-mobilization exercises, or the control group (n = 15), which received only joint mobilization. Interventions were administered three times per week over a four-week period. Outcome measures included the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, cervical ROM assessed with a Baseline Bubble Inclinometer, and the Neck Disability Index (NDI) for functional disability. Both groups showed significant improvements in VAS, ROM, and NDI scores after the intervention (p < .05). However, the experimental group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in pain reduction, flexion/extension, lateral bending, rotation ROM, and NDI compared to the control group (p < .05). The combined application of upper thoracic joint mobilization and self-mobilization exercises proved to be an effective intervention for reducing pain and improving cervical ROM and functional outcomes in adults with NNP. Therefore, this integrated intervention shows high clinical utility as a physical therapy approach for patients with non-specific neck pain. Further research, including long-term follow-up and a broader age range, is warranted.
