Abstract

This study aims to establish a systematic procedure for the collection and seizure of digital evidence in response to the illegal production and distribution of videos exploiting deepfake technology. To this end, the research involves practical execution of both web-based deepfake generation sites and installable software tools, followed by forensic analysis of digital artifacts left in the system during the video creation process. It also examines prior studies on distribution channels such as messengers, social networking services (SNS), and cloud platforms, and categorizes the forensic characteristics of digital traces identifiable in each route. Based on the installation status of tools, execution traces, and locations where outputs are stored, the study proposes investigative procedures applicable at the field level. Furthermore, it suggests standards for maintaining the integrity and authenticity of digital evidence. In particular, the study highlights the need for a technology-based selective seizure tool capable of automatically identifying deepfake videos by analyzing their association with victim information and presents a potential direction for its implementation. Ultimately, this research provides a comprehensive technical framework for investigating illegal deepfake videos and outlines the practical applicability of investigative procedures and the development of supporting forensic technologies for responding to digital sex crimes.
